  • Komodo Dragons are one of the most well known reptiles in the world and are the largest lizard alive today. It used to be thought that their prey died because of bacteria in their bite, but in 2006 it was discovered that they have a venom gland in their lower jaw. The method they use to inject the venom into their prey is very different than most snakes, they latch onto their prey with serrated teeth and rip gashes into the tissue of the victim which allows the venom that is mixed into their saliva to get into the wound. Their venom is a hemotoxin, meaning it affects the blood cells, and their specific venom doesn't allow the blood to coagulate and lowers blood pressure so the animal eventually either dies from the blood loss or is weakened enough for the dragon to safely finish it off without risking harming itself. Since the discovery of the venom in komodo dragons other scientists have been able to find multiple monitor lizards that also share this characteristic, and the reason we never thought to look was because of two things. First, with the dragons specifically, whenever tests were run on the remains of animals they had killed they were full of bacteria, the problem with this is that the areas the dragons typically hunt only have very stagnant water as the main supply of drinking water for the animals, and the attacks from dragons typically happened near these watering holes while they prey item wasn't paying attention. This could have caused cross contamination with the bacteria entering the wound, but it was later found that the bacteria in the remains wouldn't have caused such quick death and probably would have taken days to kill the animal and this caused scientists to take another look at the dragons. Second, the only reptiles we knew to be venomous had their glands on the top of the head not inside the lower jaw. So use this as a reminder to not always agree blindly with science, it used to be treated as undisputed fact that the komodo dragons killed with bacteria for nearly a hundred years until someone tested this statement and proved it completely false.
