V-J Day in Times Square, a photograph by Alfred Eisenstaedt, was published in Life magazine in 1945 with the caption: “In New York's Times Square a white-clad girl clutches her purse and skirt as an uninhibited sailor plants his lips squarely on hers”. The black and white image of George Mendonsa and Greta Friedman, best known as “The Kiss”, is one of the most famous photographs of the 20th century.
George Mendonsa was shown kissing Greta Zimmer Friedman, a dental assistant in a nurse's uniform, was captured on V-J Day on 14 August 1945 in Times Square, New York City.
For many years, the identities of the two people captured on V-J Day were a mystery — the photographer, Alfred Eisenstaedt, had not recorded either name. Several men and women claimed to be the smooching duo, but it wasn’t until the 1980s that Greta Friedman, a Holocaust survivor, and US Sailor George Mendonsa emerged as the true kissers.
Mr. Mendonsa has died aged 95 after having a seizure on Sunday in Middletown, Rhode Island, his daughter Sharon Molleur told The Providence Journal daily newspaper. He died two days before his 96th birthday. (Greta Friedman passed away aged 92 at an assisted living facility in Virginia on September 8, 2016). Friedman and Mendonsa were reunited through the photograph and developed a friendship over the years, but that kiss in 1945 was the only one they would ever share.
REST IN PEACE!
