  • One of my clients just booked a trip to Bali for the end of March. We were talking today, and I could hear the sense of urgency in her voice, knowing she was going to be getting in a bikini in just a few short months. ⁣(thank you @marcinevin for this post!)
⁣⠀
Suddenly she started talking about what other exercise she should  add to see some fast results. “I feel like I need to start running!”, she said. ⁣
⁣⠀
“Whoa, whoa, hold up I,” I replied. Let’s not jump to that. ⁣
⁣⠀
Why? Because running is incredibly stressful on the body. And this lovely young lady is under loads of stress as is. A demanding job with long work hours and travel, PCOS (resulting in hormonal imbalances and inflammation), as well as being a type A, overachiever who is incredibly hard on herself. ⁣
⁣⠀
The last thing she needs at this point is to add more stress in the form of intense exercise on top of all that. Instead, I encouraged her to prioritize her nutrition, sleep, and self care first, and if she did want to add more exercise, it could be in the form of long walks or yoga (and not the Core Power type which I know she’d be inclined to do). ⁣
⁣⠀
You see, many of the behaviors necessary for fat loss are also quite stressful on the body. Calorie deficits, strength training, and possibly some longer duration cardio to be specific.
⠀
While we must impose these stressors to attain the desired adaption of fat loss, it doesn’t negate the fact that we are also to exposed to SO many additional stressors in our every day life, and many of us are not balancing that with stress relieving activities. ⁣
⁣⠀
But if we keep pushing the gas pedal, eventually the body will become unbalanced and start to push back, often in the form of no longer responding. ⁣
⁣⠀
Whether your goal is fat loss or simply better health, you must be managing your stress! I say every stressor you are exposed to in the left column (and there are plenty of others not on this list), it needs to be balanced with AT LEAST one stress reliever from the right column. Otherwise, you will soon be up against burnout and a body that won’t do what you want it to.

  • Here we are, 22 months out of the resto business, after 24+ years in it, and the prospect of being in bed before midnight--much less 10:30!--boggles the mind! So delicious! So luxurious! And I am still catching up on my sleep, and my reading. #oldhabits #sleep
