  • Tiger shark showing up at dive site where Aqua-Trek runs shark diving is not guaranteed, but out of 2 dives we had there, it showed up on 2nd one. I think there are two large ones and one that showed up when we were there is "The Survivor".⠀
⠀
The Tiger shark is a solitary mostly nocturnal hunter. It is famous for having the widest food spectrum of all sharks, with a range of prey that includes everything, and even other smaller sharks. It also has a reputation as a "garbage eater", consuming a variety of inedible, man-made objects that then later just stay in its stomach. Though apex predators, tiger sharks are sometimes taken by groups of killer whales. It is considered a near threatened species due to finning and fishing by humans.⠀
⠀
It gets its name from the characteristic vertical bars that cover the sides of its body. Though these bars fade slightly as individuals reach adulthood, they are very noticeable in juveniles and at least partly visible throughout the lifetime. Reaching lengths of at least 5.5 m and nearly a metric tonne, the tiger shark is the fourth largest shark and second largest predatory shark, behind only the great white.⠀
⠀
REMINDER: Shark attacks are extremely rare and statistics say that less than 4.5 deaths by shark attacks per year globally.⠀

  • Into the death zone - just beneath camp 4 on the world’s tallest mountain.
.
This is the triangular pyramid of Mt. Everest. Nearly 7 weeks into the expedition, it all comes down to this. The final climb.
.
You’ve completed your acclimatization rotations. You’ve spent a grueling night above 7500m. You’ve begun breathing supplemental oxygen and you’ve officially entered the death zone. Your body is screaming for oxygen and it’s deteriorating faster than it can recover. Everything must line up just right. The weather. Your health. Your performance. Other teams’ behavior and actions. And Everest herself.
.
Just around the corner is one of the most hostile environments on the planet - the South Col, also known as camp 4. People often die in their sleep from exhaustion after their summit push. You’re already higher than most mountains on Earth and there’s another 850m to ascend.
.
This is it. It’s now or never. You do your best to rest for a few hours, wake up around 10pm in sub-zero temperatures and like a warrior preparing for battle, gear up, strap your oxygen mask to your face, emerge from your tent, look up at the night sky, observe the black pyramid with transient climbers’ headlamps in sight - and flip the switch.
.
It’s on. The summit is in sight. No time for pain. No room for errors. All of your training comes down to this.
.
Climb.
