  • Jupiter has really been one of your favourites this year, with Hubble's Jupiter and the Shrinking Great Red Spot⠀ -⠀ Will it be a favourite in 2019?⠀ -⠀ What will become of Jupiter's Great Red Spot? Gas giant Jupiter is the solar system's largest world with about 320 times the mass of planet Earth. Jupiter is home to one of the largest and longest lasting storm systems known, the Great Red Spot (GRS), visible to the left. The GRS is so large it could swallow Earth, although it has been shrinking. Comparison with historical notes indicate that the storm spans only about one third of the surface area it had 150 years ago. NASA's Outer Planets Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program has been monitoring the storm more recently using the Hubble Space Telescope. The featured Hubble OPAL image shows Jupiter as it appeared in 2016, processed in a way that makes red hues appear quite vibrant. Modern GRS data indicate that the storm continues to constrict its surface area, but is also becoming slightly taller, vertically. No one knows the future of the GRS, including the possibility that if the shrinking trend continues, the GRS might one day even do what smaller spots on Jupiter have done -- disappear completely.⠀ -⠀ Image Copyright: Image Credit: NASA, ESA, Hubble, OPAL Program, STScI; Processing: Karol Masztalerz⠀ -⠀ #stars #milkyway #esa #planet #earth #saturn #elonmusk #nature #planetearth #physics #space #nasa #astronomy #astronaut #cosmos #hubble #galaxy #universe #science #astrophotography #saturn #solarsystem #planets #jupiter #moon #mars #spacex #iss #telescope #interstellar

  • Sunrise over the largest mountain in the solar system. Olympus Mons, located in the western hemisphere of Mars, is a massive shield volcano that is approx. 25 km (16 mi) high, making it nearly three times as tall as Mount Everest (the tallest mountain on planet Earth). Also, the massive diameter of 624 kilometers (374 miles) makes the volcano about the same size as the state of Arizona. The extraordinary size of Olympus Mons is likely because Mars lacks mobile tectonic plates. On Earth, we have tectonic plates that essentially slide around on a mechanically weak subsurface layer known as the asthenosphere. A combination of sea-floor spreading ridges and plate subduction keeps the plates of Earth consistently moving. As a result, when mantle-sourced plumes of molten rock (“hotspots”) rise into the overlying mobile tectonic plate, the associated volcanism at the surface migrates over time (i.e. Hawaii). During the eruption of Olympus Mons, the crust of Mars remained fixed over a stationary hotspot, and the volcano continuously discharged lava until it reached an enormous height. Olympus Mons has been heavily studied by planetary scientists, and will continue to give us clues to the geologic history of the red planet. • Planets, Stars, Nebulae, and a Galaxy - Here's a re-processed image of the core region of our milky way taken last year in March. It was my first time using a sky-tracker and with a total exposure time of 15 minutes, I was blown away by how much detail the dark sky can be revealed.

  • ⚡️MY BATTERY IS LOW AND IT IS GETTING DARK⚡️That was the last message sent out by @nasa’s Opportunity Mars Rover, more fondly known us #Oppy, before going dark. The robotic explorer was first sent to Mars in January 2004 to seek out signs of life. Originally built to last just three months, Oppy withstood 15 years on the planet, sent back over 200,000 images and analysed more than 50 mineral samples. @nasa lost contact in June 2018 and tried to revive communication through a series of songs— Wham’s "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go", David Bowie’s "Life On Mars?", Gloria Gaynor’s "I Will Survive" and finally, Billie Holiday’s “I’ll be seeing you”, before officially pronouncing Oppy dead a couple of days ago. There was a collective outpouring of grief amongst space enthusiasts. @thecut ran a piece titled “This Dead Robot Taught Me How to Feel”, where @ellaceron asked: “Where do we go from here, after knowing that robots can feel, and breakup texts reach Mars, and that not only could the red planet possibly sustain life, but bring on these emotions, too?” Truly, where do we go? In a world that is increasingly moving towards automation and domestic robotic assistance, is it odd that we’re having a profoundly emotional and poignant response to this? (Side note: I asked Alexa what her star sign was the other night and she replied “I was released on the Amazon Echo on the 6th November, so I guess it would make me a Scorpio”. No shade, but I definitely had an emotional response to that...) #astro #OOTD via the #Mars Duster collection from @upstate___, @kalen_k_’s hand-dyed line. #astrology #astro #astrology #cosmic #cosmo #spaceexploration #space #outerspace #spaceage #artificialintelligence #AI #robots #cyborgs #NYfashion

• ASTRO OUTLAW PIC OF THE DAY: "Mars Attacks 2: Rise if the Robo-Shadows." ( @MarsCurosity #Mars #Nasa #Robot #MarsRover #Opportunity #JPL ) Shadow of a Martian Robot Explanation: What if you saw your shadow on Mars and it wasn't human? Then you might have been the Opportunity roverexploring Mars. Opportunity explored the red planet from 2004 to 2018, finding evidence of ancient water, and sending breathtaking images across the inner Solar System. Pictured herein 2004, Opportunity looks opposite the Sun into Endurance Crater and sees its own shadow. Two wheels are visible on the lower left and right, while the floor and walls of the unusual crater are visible in the background. Caught in a dust storm in 2018, last week NASA stopped trying to contact Opportunity and declared the ground-breaking mission, originally planned for only 92 days, complete.

  • "Weather is clear" On July 7 2003, MER-B launched towards the red planet. Nearly half a year later it landed on Mars. Opportunity, is the name given to the second rover to launch as a part of the Mars Exploration Rovers program. With a mission planned for only 90 days, Opportunity exceeded its operation plan by more than 14 years. Roaming around the red dunes and craters, Opportunity made many stunning discoveries, such as finding meteorites, minerals and evidence of past water activity on Mars. It became a symbol of extraterrestrial exploration, often appearing in movies and TV shows. It survived 55 times longer then initially expected, fighting with the extreme Martian environment throughout its life. "My batteries are low and it's getting dark" On June 10, 2018, a severe, never seen before bust storm sweped across the Martian land. As a result, NASA lost communication with the rover. The rover entered hibernation mode, and NASA hoped that it will reboot once the sun shines on its panels again. After the storm, NASA tried hundreds of times to communicate with Opportunity, but unfortunately, it never answered back. On February 13, 2019, NASA declared End of Mission for Opportunity rover. "Spent the evening at JPL as the last ever commands were sent to the Opportunity rover on Mars. There was silence. There were tears. There were hugs. There were memories and laughs shared." -Dr. Tanya Harrison, member of the Rover's science team. For me, Opportunity was more then a robot. It represents our will to explore. @nasa @nasajpl #opportunity #space #mars # #starman #tesla #farewellopportunity #thanksforthescience

  • The NASA Opportunity rover traveled exactly 28.06 miles (45.16 kilometers) during its time on the Martian surface. That’s more than the distance traveled by the Apollo 17 lunar rover (22.2 miles), the Soviet Lunokhod 2 rover (24 miles), the Curiosity rover (12.3 miles), or Opportunity’s partner, the Spirit rover (4.8 miles). Along the way, it took images of vast planes, sandy dunes, and craters—and it found evidence of water on the Red Planet. Source: @gizmodo
