  • It’s been over 25 years since I’ve spent Chinese New Year in China, and even longer since I’ve been back in XiGu Park (西固公园), where my parents used to take me to see the lights every year until we moved to LA. So nice to be back and to look at the lights together even though it was super cold. Happy CNY and Valentine’s Day everyone! 🧧💝

  • My true love forever 🍜 | 蘭州拉麵 I had seen this storefront a few times before on my runs, but never went in. It wasn’t until I saw the owner pulling noodles near the entrance that I realized I had been living in China for 5 months and hadn’t figured out this was a Lanzhou Pulled Noodle restaurant run by northwest minority Muslims?! I was devastated. Noodles are my life (even though I’m a southerner by blood). No one had introduced this place to me because this isn’t the local Hunan or Miao cuisine. Also, because of the halal standards, the beef is more expensive and difficult to find so their prices are slightly higher than average for a casual meal. I tried to savor as much as I could before leaving. No matter what the interior looks like, this is a MUST EAT IN CHINA. Excuse the poor lighting and low quality. . . . #noodlesforever #noodles #noodlepull #lanzhou #lamien #soup #beefnoodles #handpulled #fresh #food #foodie #halal #china #chinesefood #travel #foodtravel #蘭州拉麵 #拉面 #牛肉麵

  • The best dumplings in the city in my humble opinion - fried pork topped with chili oil and vinegar. And at 8 for $4 it’s also one of the best deals. Tip- while delicious, the restaurant ambiance is completely lacking and staff can be quite gruff so order to go, top with chili oil before leaving, and eat on a nearby bench or park #culinaryitineraries

  • Lanzhou Beef Noodle Bar - South Yarra Branch⁣ Spicy Braised Beef Noodle⁣ Lanzhou Beef Noodle first launched in 2017 and has exploded into the Melbourne noodle soup scene. Soup fans from around Melbourne have gone crazy for their perfect hand pulled noodles and their aromatic beef broth. There is something acrobatic and magical about the way these noodle masters toss the noodles into the air and thin them out using only their fingers. On a recent trip to Beijing I experienced a number of Lanzhou beef soups so was keen to get into the deep end of the soup bowl in Melbourne, and a deep deep bowl it was. Lanzhou Beef Noodle Bar do not mess around when it comes to their ingredients. I asked for extra spicy and what I got was a delicious mix of dried chilis, numbing sichuan peppers and their homemade chili oil. It was great to see that they don’t skimp out on their ingredients too. Lots of coriander, lots of leek and deliciously soft braised beef. Quite fatty - yes, but this just makes this soup even more homely. I went with the triangular noodle option - something that a few of the other Lanzhou restaurants don’t offer and the shape and texture of the noodle was perfect. Easy to grab with chopsticks and easy to slurp up. This is a soup I would recommend for those looking for something to warm them up. It’s a soup that has such great consistency that won’t leave you disappointed.

  • After spending a bit in Nanjing and doing sightseeing in and close by the city (visited things i will do later again and again, so i will show you later those tourist attractions). I was packing again and went to Chengdu 成都, not the first time i been there, before 2001 and 2004 i was there already. It was just more a stopover. And i need it, after traveling 1957 km with the train (30 hours) I had to freshen up myself with good food and some Sichuan beer. I went after 3 days staying in Chengdu to Lanzhou 兰州. Again a 1172 km train journey. I wanted to go to Xiahe (Sangqu) བསང་ཆུ but as there where tumults after the 2008 olympics and foreigners are not allowed, i failed to go there, even i tried to go from Xining 西宁 ཟི་ལིང་།. I found a guide in Xining and went with him instead to see some tibetan villages and temples outside Xining. #10yearsinasia #2009 #chengdu #成都 #lanzhou #兰州 #xining #西宁 #ཟི་ལིང་#journeytothewest #sichuan #gansu #qinghai #china #tibet #village #monastry #temple #buddhism
