The seismiles (6k). The west of the province of Catamarca is one of the highest elevation regions of the Andes. Some twenty summits exceed 6,000 meters high and are an irresistible destination for the climbers of the world. The Seismiles invite to an adventure that goes far beyond sports. Here, the spirit gets drunk, step by step, of the magnificent power of a hardened landscape, of bare hills and high plains where the mountaineer finally manages to feel 'in heaven'. One of the favorite regions contains the Pissis and Ojos del Salado volcanoes; Walter Penck and Incahuasi; Cerro Tres Cruces, Nacimientos and San Francisco. The expeditions start, in all cases, from the town of Fiambalá, the so-called "Puerta de los Seismiles", where the traveler can count on all the necessary infrastructure and services. Initiated the adventure, some groups use the shelter Las Grutas for acclimatization before the ascents.
Ojos del Salado is the highest volcano in the world and the second highest in America after Aconcagua; to 6,893 m.s., is one of the favorites of the climbers because of the difficulty of their access on the Argentine side.
In the limit of Catamarca with the province of La Rioja, the Pissis offers five summits for the ascent: the main one, to 6,882 m.s.n.m. Meanwhile, the most accessible hill is the San Francisco with a height of 6.080 m.s., near the international road route of the border crossing with Chile. Something similar happens with the Incahuasi, of 6,638 m.s.
IMPORTANT: The Seismiles can be visited between the months of October and April in the company of companies or specialized guides, it is necessary to travel the area in 4 × 4 trucks that have the necessary equipment, logistics assistance, oxygen supply, high mountain feeding and rescue teams.
