MOVIE REVIEW: AMARCORD - FREDERICO FELLINI (1973)
In Amarcord, Fellini portrays the daily life of the society in italy's 30s. Fascism is on the rise, teens are growing to men... Fellini makes everything seem very natural, but he doesn't fail to intersperse some humorous exaggerations. The protagonist is Titta, a teenager who grows up in a working class family and who's just starting exploring himself and his life as a man. With his friends Ovo, Ciccio and Gigliozzi and others he causes a great stir in the whole city. His crush is Gradisca, a middle-aged woman, beloved by everyone in the city. The movie is a roller coaster ride. While we're first laughing about a perverse joke by Titta's friends, suddenly, the movie gets a sad twist, as Titta's mother Miranda dies. As every other normal boy in that age, Titta has dreams, big dreams. He dreams of marrying Gradisca. Sometimes, Fellini lets the line between reality and fiction blur. Lots of Titta's experiences are daydreams. The most iconic scene however, is a rather insignificant one. When Titta's family goes on a trip with their uncle Teo. In a moment when they don't pay attention, Teo climbs up on a tree and starts screeming: Voglio una donnaaa! (I want a woman!). Seems crazy but in that sequence of the movie, the scene couldn't appear more natural. That's Fellini's genius. He manages to combine the most bizarre and obscene scenes and still make it seem fitting and natural. In my opinion, this movie denotes growth, juvenile curiosity and sovereignity.
Good Kid m.A.A.d City is the debut album from the best rapper of this generation, Kendrick Lamar. If I had to describe this album I would say it's like what listening to Boys N the Hood would be like. It follows the life of a young Kendrick in an unchronological order. It has some K-Dot's best tracks like m.A.A.d City, Sing About Me/I'm Dying of Thirst and The Art of Peer Pressure as well as some of his most underated songs in Sherane A.K.A. Master Splinter's Daughter and Compton. It's an incredible album from start to finish expect for the song Real which is an obvious low point of the project. That song is probably the only thing that keeps the album from being a 10 but for Kendrick to have dropped something this incredible as his debut, that's some goat shit.
