  • Do that pinch to zoom thing and you’ll see this girl getting her first stemming action on the ice. Feeling more confident after a long day of laps.

  • Trying my best to soak up all the juicy, messy bits of the process. 🍋💦 We’re always making a fuss about the next move. It’s nice sometimes to just 🎶relax yourself girl, please settle down🎶 into the awesomeness of where you are. ⚡️

  • She says: Mom, I'm not happy. I need something else.
I think: What do we know about happiness at 14? How do we define it? How do we differentiate unhappiness from discomfort, from dissatisfaction, from inside turmoil and unrest?
Heck, how do we know at 40?
And who am I to judge?
But I don't see an unhappy child. I see a growing human being. I see exasperation, anxiety and wanting to be different - from her family and from her twin sister. And I agree that this is hard if not nearly impossible in this lifestyle.
I also see the magic wand of a new life, of new possibilities. The idea that all will be better when/if/because… And maybe it would. But it’s also very likely that it will not. And then what?
I want to say: oh, honey, I know how you feel. But the truth is that I don't know. I know my own discomfort or sense of unhappiness. I know 14. But I’m not her.
As a parent, my job is to listen and to help my children to grow. To read between the lines, behind the fears. Not to fix anything. And not necessarily to make it easy or better.
My job is to steer the ship. To show them the ropes, but not to hand them the bar.
Together, we will explore some options. The seas of teenagehood can be rough. We are good captains. I know will figure this one out.
As my friend @reneetougas wisely says in her Freedom education course: becoming dissatisfied at the age of 14 is not a huge cause for alarm.
We’re all game to settle down if it’s that important to her, but nobody is really sure if that is what is called for right now…
