  • As with any firsts this piece will always be special to me. It was a massive breakthrough, artistically and mentally. 🚀
A self-imposed glass ceiling of possibility broken with the completion of something I created and deemed worthy of a festival stage.
After 3 years of gogo dancing and managing various teams, I took time off to live in the woods within an isolated community doing trail work. Following that highly introspective time I knew I still wanted to return to dancing and performing, but with more.. “muchness”. At that time I didn’t think of myself as an artist, or that performing and costuming was an introspective journey of expression and connection. I just knew I wanted to get more out of it personally and garner more respect; in all a fuzzy concept of how I view my art and journey today. I picked up silk fans and after months of practice I applied to and was accepted to perform my first festival; Pirate Party 2017! (Thanks to Marc of @masc_artisans
for seeing something in me!🙏💓) I took this opportunity very seriously, a time for me to give it my all and join this creative world I admired so much. This piece fittingly came from channeling a phoenix; a fiery character of transformation.🔥🔥🔥
The festival turned out to be such a magical experience. My costumes and performance were so well received by other performers that I was beside myself with gratitude. And although validation through acceptance by others is generally not the road to focus on, a bit of “Hey, I see you and like what you’re doing. Keep it up!” from other creatives goes a long way. Performing for and hearing for the first time Phutureprimitive’s remix of “Dusted Compass” by The Human Experience was a vibe I’ll never forget. 💖
This headpiece also has a twin in Spokane! A commission I made for an aerialist who loves red and black, with a different emblem on front with little wings. 🕊
