Have you ever been SO irritated when someone says, “the joy of the Lord is my strength!” while you’re in the midst of intense strain, financial obliteration or I don’t know, total destruction via heartbreak?
Pretty sure there’s also something in Proverbs about how singing cheerful songs to sad people is like vinegar on the teeth.
So ponder that, Karen.
We talk a lot about the Holy Spirit for casting out demons! resisting temptation! overcoming sin!
Here is what Jesus has been teaching me during the last 2 years from hell, a time period we will now refer to as “The Undoing”. I have been sad a lot during The Undoing. I have been rejected a lot. And so I’ve gotten really good at this whole “self love/self care” stuff.
I’ve had to take myself by the hand over and over again and decide to love me.
Now, based on the 4,638 memes I’ve seen on social media, that should have come by sitting in bed eating ice cream and watching Friends reruns on Netflix for 6 hours.
Strangely enough, while I have eaten lots of ice cream and do occasionally look up “Smelly Cats” on YouTube for a laugh, I’ve actually done most of my self care facedown on some pretty smelly floors.
I’ve discovered that the Holy Spirt is a fabulous tool in the war of heartbreak.
That you can find wild strength and TRUE joy by surrendering the punch-in-the-gut sadness to Jesus. He loves so well that even as you sit in your grief, holding a letter or with tears falling onto an IG screen open to a message from a boy with a beautiful brain but a rather glum soul, you honestly do see how you’d never be happy in that anyways.
Because Jesus does this thing where He makes you feel desired, pursued, delightful, interesting.
Try it sometime, letting Him love you.
I mean, imagine it.
He throws out galaxies and oceans, forests and mountains. Then He makes a person and God himself has to take a day off because what He just created is that GOOD.
Heartbreak < Holy Spirit.
Boredom crush < Jesus.
Go freaking love yourself the way Jesus does: by getting rid of the toxins & pouring grace and growth all over.
