  • Would much rather be gallivanting around finding new brunch spots, instead I’m in the library on a Saturday 😅😂. 4 assignments, 3 exams to go and I’ll be University freeeee 📕

  • This is the first of three posts documenting the life of inhabitants in Roman Chester. Chester is a small, affluent town in Northern England. It’s also my nearest town - about a 10 minute drive away. Chester was founded around 2000 years ago by the Romans; outside of London it was the most important settlement in Roman Britain. During the Norman conquest Chester was the ideal place for controlling Northern England and eventually facilitating the Norman conquest of Wales. In the 18/19th century it was a leisurely town for the world’s first industrialists. In the early 21st century Chester has a high concentration of international financial services and is in commuting distance to Liverpool and Manchester as well as villages in Cheshire. •

Pictured is an altar excavated in 1968 which is dedicated to one of Chester’s Roman inhabitant. Translated from Classical Greek it reads “Antiochus the doctor honoured among the immortals who are the all-surpassing saviours of men; Asklepios of the gentle hands, Hygeia and Panakeia.” •

Chester was constructed as a military and civilian base in Roman Britain. The man mentioned here, Antiochus was a Greek military physician who served the legate. Antiochus commissioned this to honour the polytheistic deities associated with medicine and he originally came from what is now modern day Turkey. Excavated in 1968 in the site of the Old Market Hall in Chester town centre. Exhibited in the Grosvenor Museum, January 2019. •
