a piece from ‘shades of lovers’ that i really like. it’s not very poetic—i don’t even think i would call it a poem—but i wrote it in a fit of frustration one night and after some thinking, decided to keep it. pain doesn’t always need to be expressed poetically, and neither does heartbreak. sometimes, it’s better to just put it plainly. •

DO NOT ENTER you’re not beautifully thin
You don’t belong, not cool enough to fit in⠀
DO NOT ENTER the neon buzzing reads
Authority and discipline breeds a disease
The power it has to conform and control
Is the power we give to these words we are sold
Each of us has a salesman inside⠀
DO NOT ENTER into that which we hide
The secrets and pain we lock in with pride
For fear and distrust we will never confide
The wall’s growing higher no trespassing will fly⠀
DO NOT ENTER my soul or my mind
and disturb all my thoughts for what you might find
Is that I want to hold on to my suicidal decline
For why invest in life when one day we die?⠀
DO NOT ENTER is pointed at you
How do these words impact your view?
I'll play in your shallows until we can both go deeper.
Wait for the one who proves to you that love is not supposed to hurt...
