Red Squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris). Although apparently much loved, this beautiful mammal continues to struggle for survival as numbers have fallen dramatically. Once widespread and frequently seen in woodlands across the UK, the red squirrel has been pushed further and further north. Population strongholds are in Scotland, Northumberland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and the Lake District as well as on islands such as Brownsea.
The introduction of the grey squirrel has not only outcompeted the red for habitat, but also carries with it the squirrelpox virus, deadly to red squirrels. The huge decline in the UK's woodlands has also significantly reduced red squirrel habitat.
Thanks to the efforts of determined volunteers and conservation groups such as the Red Squirrel Survival Trust and Red Squirrels Northern England, numbers are being kept near stable at some key locations such as Cumbria and Northumberland where the red squirrel continues to hang on. #redsquirrel#wildlifetrust#ukwildlife#naturelovers#lovenature#squirrel#bpa_nature_#britishwildlife#nature_photobook#woodlandtrust#springwatch#uk_wildlife_images#thebritishwildlife#redsquirrelsurvivaltrust#redsquirrelsnorthernengland
