  • Are drop sets daft? 🤔 - We should know by now that training volume is the driver of muscle gains allowing for progressive overload and the required intensities of training (I’ve spoken on RPEs before and can do again). This means that we need to look at where drop sets sit within our training and programming for them to be a positive to training volume, progressive overload and your intensity 🔑 - For me, use of drop set(s) are primarily a way to get a high amount of volume in during a shorter space of time. They also help to hit your slow twitch muscle fibres and motor units that aren’t maybe fully fatigued or stimulated after a traditional straight strength focused set. This impact on the slow twitch motor units may lead to more hypertrophy, although a lot of that is speculation and anecdotal evidence at this stage as seen in Jeff Nippard’s latest YouTube Q&A 🎥 - Generating of metabolic stress is a driver of hypertrophy and gainzzz but I would certainly look to nail the basic fundamentals of my programme before having drop sets galore in your training sessions. Although it might feel great, are you definitely progressing the load or reps that you’re using or are you only pushing hard in these drop sets to get more of a sweat and a pump after going half hearted in your standard work? So focus on the main core of your work early in the session and perhaps have a drop set or two later in the session to help you get that little more volume in a short space of time alongside some more metabolic stress 👊🏻 - Main movements which are friendly to drop sets from a safety and long term recovery perspective are: Leg extensions, bicep curls, lat raises, tricep pushdowns. These are smaller movemnets/muscles and won’t break you too much for future sessions.
