Hazel McCallion has company. You may remember the 97-year-old former mayor of Mississauga taking to the walls at @hubclimbing earlier this month. Well here’s 99-year-old Greta Plowman giving it a go at @Manchester_climbing_centre in January. Full report from her grandson below
Mum and me took my 99yro grandma climbing for the first time last week.

For Tim Dobson, watching his grandma tie in and start her first ever climb was probably not the calmest moment of his life. Especially 3 days after Christmas, when the common feeling is often one of sluggish reluctance to climb off the sofa, never mind the top of a route.
Not for Greta. With her 69-year old daughter Judith belaying, and watched carefully by climber-grandson Tim, she calmly made her way up her first top-rope route at @manchester_climbing_centre.
Greta, who has never climbed before, said afterwards “It was marvelous! Really exciting! My fingers ached a bit, but I learnt to push more with my feet and that made all the difference. “It was such a thrilling experience to get the top. I’m very thankful to Judith and Tim for supporting me and making this wonderful experience happen.” Judith added: “I think she has stronger hands than she thinks – she’s often using handrails to pull herself up and pushing down. Anyone who can climb the stairs can climb – and Greta proved that today.” “She was asking me if she did good for someone her age, I said the average person her age was dead, and so she was definitely slightly above average”. Greta’s past adventures include sailing across the channel in an open dinghy, so she’s not exactly a stranger to exciting challenges.
Manchester Climbing Centre Owner John Dunne @dunne9012 said “I think Greta holds the record for the oldest climber in the centre. She proves that it doesn't matter how old you are, what shape of body you have or how fit you feel you are, climbing is for everyone.”
STRETCHING DI DITA E AVAMBRACCIO💪🏼🖖🏼: Mantenere ciascuna posizione per 40-60sec, per 1-3 volte ciascuna.
Questi sono esercizi di stretching statico: ideali a fine allenamento/arrampicata, o in altri giorni. Questo perché l’allungamento prolungato e mantenuto delle fibre muscolari ne riduce (in quel momento) le capacità contrattili.
🙋♂️ Quando gli impegni me lo consentono,
mi piace arrampicare. In parete, nel momento in cui il piede si stacca dal suolo, si entra in un altra realtà:
🎵 La musica ed i rumori svaniscono,
comincia la danza verticale. Un equilibrio mentale tra l'attenzione al gesto e la paura di cadere. 🤷♂️ Non sempre vince la prima.
È importante per me arrampicare.
Mi gratifica, aiuta la mia autostima e mi tiene in forma ed attivo. 😉 Insomma, i 48 si avvicinano, non sono più un ragazzino.
Fare sport, così come il percorso alimentare, così come la crescita personale, fanno parte di uno stile di vita sobrio che abbiamo scelto di seguire; che tutti possono seguire. 🔸️Non so a quale punto tu sia della tua scalata: 🔸️Un appiglio per salire, insieme, lo troviamo. ✔Non mollare, vale la pena arrivare in cima.✒
