  • Allow yourself to be a beginner. No one starts off being excellent. Steady growth is better than no growth at all. Here’s a story that really encourages me! It’s just brilliant; The Chinese Bamboo Tree 🌳
⠀⠀
‘Like any plant, growth of the Chinese Bamboo Tree requires nurturing – water, fertile soil, sunshine. In its first year, we see no visible signs of activity. In the second year, again, no growth above the soil. The third, the fourth, still nothing. Our patience is tested and we begin to wonder if our efforts (caring, water, etc.) will ever be rewarded.
⠀⠀
And finally in the fifth year – behold, a miracle! We experience growth. And what growth it is! The Chinese Bamboo Tree grows 80 feet in just six weeks!
⠀⠀
But let’s be serious, does the Chinese Bamboo Tree really grow 80 feet in six weeks? Did the Chinese Bamboo Tree lie dormant for four years only to grow exponentially in the fifth? Or, was the little tree growing underground, developing a root system strong enough to support its potential for outward growth in the fifth year and beyond?
⠀⠀
The answer is, of course, obvious. Had the tree not developed a strong unseen foundation it could not have sustained its life as it grew. The same principle is true for people. People, who patiently toil towards worthwhile dreams and goals, building strong character while overcoming adversity and challenge, grow the strong internal foundation to handle success, while get-rich- quickers and lottery winners usually are unable to sustain unearned sudden wealth.’
⠀⠀
Steady growth is still relevant - not just referring to money. Don’t be afraid to pace yourself. Hidden seasons are beautiful and truly build you up. As long as you’re moving forward, you’re doing just that...Moving!

  • Basic Wear series Outfit #4: We can do so many more but I would stop at 4 for the Black Tshirt☺.
Basically the idea is to mix and match with color, patterns and structure of the outfit.
This one I paired the Tshirt with patterned trousers and layered with waterfall shrug. Dressed it up by adding chunky earrings( Totally optional!).

  • These Quechua women are just as beautiful and vibrant as the fabrics that they craft.⁣⁣ 😍⁣⠀
⁣⁣⁣⠀
Quechua women participate in all aspects of producing the organic fabrics we use in Qhipas shoes. From walking herd to pasture, to spinning and dying the yarns, to weaving the fabrics themselves.⁣⁣ 🐑🌿💄⁣⠀
⁣⁣⁣⠀
The techniques that these women use have been passed down from generation to generation for thousands of years.⁣⁣ 👵🏾👧🏾👶🏾⁣⠀
⁣⁣⁣⠀
Quechua communities exist in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina and each has its own unique fabrics that utilize patterns and symbols that communicate stories about their history and their environment.⁣⁣ 🌈🌳⁣⠀

We celebrate the beauty of these traditions with every pair of Qhipas we make… and by wearing them, you do as well! 🥂🙌🏾

  • Would you wear my wool?

From pasture to foot, sheep wool is not only better for the environment than synthetic fabrics; it is breathable, wicks moisture, and is more sustainable.

All-in-all, we think it is the elite shoe fabric. Which is why wool is the fabric we use for all of our Qhipas shoes.

What do you think? Is sustainable and eco-friendly worth a try?

  • #ootd time! I went full @reformation in anticipation of their new vintage line, and was sadly a little disapppointed. There were some great statement pieces (Pink ponchos, plaid pants, tweed coats), but then a lot of things like generic unlined dresses going for $120 (WHAT?! I can get an unlined vintage dress at Urban Jungle for $10), and t shirts for $68 (Another WHAT?! Considering they weren't like vintage t shirts for iconic concerts or old brands, I'm shocked.) Ultimately, my thoughts were, though overpriced for what the items were, it wasn't completely out of line with typical Reformation price points. However, the quality of the curated items just did not seem to reach the typical Reformation standard. I'll be going there for some future sustainable investment pieces, but not for vintage. AND, I am still loving this top and skirt (No matter how many times I have to mend the patches, it's too cute!).
#ImWearing
Hat - @target , 2/30+ wears for this new item. We're gettin' there!
Shirt - @reformation
Skirt - @reformation
Tights - Unlabeled, hand me up from an old coworker
Shoes - A gift from my boyfriend!
Collar Clips - Unlabeled, a hand me up from that same coworker!

  • These vividly colorful wool yarns produced by our Quechua artisans are quite remarkable!
Wool fiber takes dyes beautifully, absorbing them deeply and permanently without the need for combining chemicals.

Much more durable than cotton, silk, or alpaca, wool is naturally elastic and resilient. Wool is resistant to compression and abrasion and recovers from wrinkles quickly and naturally.

Wool fabrics wick moisture away from the skin and can hold moisture without feeling wet. It keeps a layer of air next to the skin, making it comfortable in all seasons.

Mildew and mold resistant, it is hypoallergenic and is an entirely sustainable resource that requires no harm to the animals or to plant life.

Our artisans produce these yarns organically without the use of any refinement or treatment chemicals.

What’s not to love? ❤️

  • Don Francisco, who leads our team of Ecuadorian shoemakers (Zapateros), began learning the trade from his father 47 years ago at age 15. 🧒🏾📚⠀
⠀
Like his father and uncles, Francisco has never known any other work than hand-crafting shoes.⠀
⠀
His knowledge of styles, stitches, and materials is extensive, and beyond impressive. 🏆⠀
⠀
Francisco was recently given carte blanche to make “the best hand-crafted shoes possible,” and is proud of the development and evolution of Qhipas footwear. ⠀
⠀
We are damn lucky to have him. 👏🏾👏🏾⠀
⠀
P.S. Just wait till you see the boots he is working on now!! 😱💯

  • Indigenous Quechua people have historically used plants, insects, and minerals to create beautiful and vivid natural dyes.⁣ ⁣ 🌈
⁣⁣
The techniques and materials used to achieve particular shades vary by region, based on what is available locally.⁣
⁣
From greens that are drawn from the chilica bush to oranges from achiote – these artisans used their natural resources to create real beauty.⁣ 🌱🍁🌿
⁣
Cochineal, a pigment created by a small parasitic insect that lives on cactus, can produce over 20 different tonalities of color from blood-red to purple to lead grey. 🌵🌵
⁣
Cochineal was worth its weight in gold to ancient indigenous people. It was given as a tribute to emperors, revered in both Mayan and Aztec cultures, and prized by the conquistadors of Spain because the dye was of much better quality than European dyes. ⁣ ⁣
Cochineal is still used today to color fabrics, cosmetics and food because it is natural, non-toxic, water soluble and more stable than synthetic dyes. 🧶⁣💄
⁣
We proudly incorporate this amazing cultural heritage into each pair of Qhipas we make.

  • Quechua hands rarely stop moving. ⁣⠀
⁣⠀
The actual weaving of the various fabrics produced by these artisans comprises less than 20% of the time involved in making a finished product.⠀
⠀
Manually shearing sheep is hot, dirty and time-consuming work. Raw wool is prepared for spinning by washing and drying it, and by ridding it of burs and dirt. It is then carded into rolls before it is spun. ⠀
⁣⠀
Using the drop spindle, one of the oldest textile tools in existence, is exceedingly difficult to do well. Spinning is the most time consuming of all the weaver’s tasks and not all artisans can master it.⠀
⁣⠀
To obtain evenly spun thread, the spinner must maintain the correct position and tension of the fingers holding the fibers, and master the rhythm of drawing out and feeding the wool into the strand. ⠀
⁣⠀
Quechua women work the task of spinning yarn into their everyday activities. They are often seen spinning yarn as they walk herds to pasture, and while tending to their kids, and while carrying loads to market. They even spin as they socialize - no idle moments!⁣⠀
⁣⠀

We have been testing out different stitches, construction techniques, natural glues, materials (soles, types of leather, etc.), and working on perfecting our sizing. 💪🏽⁣⠀
⁣⠀
We have visited many leather producers, for example, looking at the ecological impact of their production techniques.⁣⠀
⁣⠀
What do you see or feel that can be improved? What do you like best about them? 👀⁣⠀
⁣⠀
For example, the toe box is a bit small in the larger sizes, especially for folks with wide feet. We are ordering new sets of lasts to fix that. ⁣⠀
⁣⠀
What else can we do to make Qhipas as awesome as possible? Let us know in the comments below 👇🏽
  • A shout out to all the folks who have gotten their hands on one of our prototypes over the last month or two... Thank you so much for the posts, stories, and word-of-mouth sharing. 🙏🏾🙏🏾⁣⠀
    ⁣⠀
“Demand” is blowing up and we couldn’t be more excited for our launch in April!! 🔥🔥🔥⁣⠀

  • The quality of a weaver’s work is affected by his or her pride in their craftsmanship. ⁣
⁣
When weavers weave for themselves or their families, or for sale within their communities, their work will be recognized and judged for its skill. Therefore, in those circumstances, weavers will take the time necessary to do their very best work. ⁣
⁣
However, when weavers produce for sale outside of their communities, a tension develops between pride in their work and their need to maximize profit by working quickly. ⁣
⁣
When weavers do their best work, they will use a harder beat on the fabric. This will be evident by wefts that are closer together, selvedges that are more even, and patterns that are more finely made. ⁣
⁣
We are working closely with our Quechua weavers in Peru, who have formed a committee to oversee the quality and production of the fabric sold to us through their cooperative. ⁣
⁣
We have agreed to pay 30% more than the “local price” for the fabric so that our artisanal partners can afford to take the time to do their best work. ⁣
⁣
They take great pride in knowing that people around the world will be wearing our shoes made with their fabric and learning a bit about their cultural legacy. ⁣
⁣
We will also pay to them 10% of the net profits on sales of Qhipas for the purpose of building a school and helping to preserve their language and culture... our social mission. But that topic will be saved for a future post.

  • Saturday Style Insights // What are your patterns and prints doing for your figure?
:
Have you ever thought about the patterns your wear and how you wear them?
:
Prints in general add volume, they will make you look bigger than you are. So if you're self-conscious about the 'size' or proportions of your body - understanding how to use prints in the right way can be extremely flattering.
:
For example: :
*For minimising: opt for smaller prints like polka dots and smaller flowers and shapes. Ideally, you'll wear print on the area you're less self conscious of and let a neutral colour compliment it.
*For maximising: If carry your weight at the bottom, opt for horizontal stripes at the top (it helps create balance)
*For lengthening: go for vertical stripes *For adding volume: go for big prints and geometric shapes
:
:
If you’re new to wearing prints, I would suggest you ease yourself in by adding accessories first. :
Team pattern & prints with basics and neutrals, so you get the full impact of wearing something bold without looking like you’ve tried too hard.
:
:
➡️ What patterns and shapes do you wear and what do they do for your body shape?
:
:
Me > I have an hourglass / bell shape depending on how many cakes I've been eating 🍩 - so I tend to use horizontal stripes to even out my hips when I start to carry our weight on my lower body.
Me > I'm petite so I steer away from big prints that dwarf me and make me look like I have put on extra weight.
:
➡️ What celebs or bloggers do you know that wear prints and patterns really well?

  • Ethical fashion. Slow fashion. Sustainable fashion. Conscious consumer. Ethical shopping. What does it all mean? Why should we care??⁣
⁣
If we simply pause a moment before hitting that Buy Now! button and consider what the effects of our purchase might be... our small acts can collectively have big impacts. ⁣
⁣
When we choose hand-made rather than mass-produced, and natural fibers instead of synthetic, we avoid contributing to serious global issues such as environmental degradation and worker exploitation. ⁣
⁣
Sure, we all have gym shoes and t-shirts made with toxic chemicals in massive factories on the other side of the world. Those aren’t going away anytime soon. But if we simply pause a moment and think about it, our little acts of consciousness will change the world for the better. ⁣

  • Feeling feisty on this Thursday!! 🐯😉👊🏻I go back and forth in my love with animal print. When I was like 13 years old I decorated my bedroom in all things animal print . Then, when I was over it I was soo over it. Now, I’m into it again. Something about wearing it just makes me feel like 🔥 and like a student said today ...a little ROCKST🌟R too!! Clothes are not superficial. What you wear totally affects your mood and thus your mindset and mindset is everything. That’s why I wear “ happy clothes” and all the things that bring me joy, positive energy, and that empower me to handle my day in the best way whatever it may bring! ❤️
