Due to its close ties, with #Constantinople , #Kiev grew from a crude backwater cluster of wooden buildings into the impressive capital of a #prosperous and organized state. The rise of Kiev marked the appearance of #Russia ’s first important unified territory. #Svyatoslav and #Vladimir led the way in establishing Kiev’s regional power. They expanded Kiev to the west into Poland and north toward the Baltic Sea. Vladimir fought off intrusive nomadic tribes from the steppes.
In 1019, Vladimir’s son #YaroslavtheWise came to the throne and continued Kiev’s regional dominance. Following the example of the Eastern Roman Emperors, Yaroslav skillfully contracted strategic marriages for his daughters and sisters to the kings and princes of the emerging Germanic states of #WesternEurope . Those #dynasticmarriages helped him to forge important trading alliances. At the same time, he created a legal code tailored to Kiev’s commercial culture. Many of its statutes dealt with property law. Yaroslav also built the first library in Kiev. Under his rule, Christianity prospered. By the 12th century, Kiev was had over 400 churches.
The decline of the Kievan state started with the death of Yaroslav in 1054. During his reign, Yaroslav had made what turned out to be a crucial error. He had divided his domain among his sons, instead of following the custom of passing on the throne and lands to the eldest son. Upon Yaroslav’s death, his sons engaged in a fratricidal campaign against each other to secure their positions and establish themselves as hegemons. To the detriment of the state building efforts of the past the principle of male primogeniture was set aside permanently and a new tradition of sub-dividing territories among sons implemented. With the Christian #Crusades the numerous clashes between Christians and Muslims for control of the Holy Lands added to Kiev’s troubles by disrupting vital trade routes and contact. On the heels of the territorial disintegration and economic woes came a new threat.
