Snow melting from the rooftops of Gyeonbokgung 💧 Adorned with colorful motifs representing longevity and harmony, you will also see maewha (매화) or plum blossoms decorating the ends of Gyeonbok Palace's (견복궁) wooden beams. While plum trees have long been admired in East Asia for their beautiful flowers and delicious fruit, they also serve as symbols for strength and renewal since the buds blossom at winter's end and can be admired into spring.🌺 Perhaps it is for this reason that the flower was chosen for the Imperial Seal of the Joseon dynasty, the last and longest ruling dynastic kingdom of Korea. Today, this flower's image is popular across a variety of traditional artistic media, such as bags, clothes and cards. The first heavy snow of the season surprised Seoul and many parts of South Korea last November. Despite being tempted to enjoy the scene from the warmth of my room, I am glad that I was able to capture the joy the snow brought as I ventured to Gyeonbokgung and Bukchon village. While the tourists and locals that flocked the palace gates provided many photo worthy opportunities, the magpies stole the limelight. 🐦 Known as 까치 ("kkachi"), these birds representing good luck are the namesake of the traditional children's overcoat called 까치 두루마기 ("kkachi durumagi").
